Saturday 15th May Afternoon Workshops

Saturday 15 May

Afternoon workshops: 1.30pm to 5.00pm

Workshop 5 - WORKSHOP FULL

Calibrating workplace assessments for learners on clinical rotations

Louis Pangaro (Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda) and Rechell Rodriguez (San Antonio Military Medical Center), USA

Venue: Hyatt Regency Hotel

Cost: $125

This workshop is intended for those who desire to achieve reliable and valid assessments of students’ achievement in the workplace, ie, on clinical rotations. Precision in assessing students through observations of teachers is elusive, and directors of clinical attachments and clerkships struggle with getting useful information about students in a time-frame that allows feedback. Measurements of inter-teacher agreement about individual trainees is especially discouraging. This workshop will provide an overview of complimentary use of quantified and semi-quantitative methods in assessing learners on clinical rotations, with a view to having sufficient precision for feedback and high-stakes decisions when needed. Emphasis will be placed on formative methods, and in getting consistency in the observations of diverse faculty observers through frame-of-reference training. Participants will practice face-to-face discussion with teachers as a way of calibrating their observations about students.

Workshop 6

Developing high-quality multiple-choice tests to assess application of knowledge using patient vignettes

Kathleen Z Holtzman and David B Swanson (National Board of Medical Examiners, Philadelphia, USA)

Venue: Hyatt Regency Hotel

Cost: $125

Writing high-quality multiple choice questions (MCQs) is difficult. Questions often contain flaws in phrasing clueing ‘test-wise’ examinees and/or focus on unimportant content. Reflecting worldwide shifts toward integrative curricula, this workshop focuses on writing single-best-answer MCQs assessing application of basic science and clinical knowledge in patient care situations, emphasizing preparation of items assessing more than just recall of isolated facts. Both item writing and item review are addressed; blueprinting of multiple-choice tests is also discussed.

Workshop 7

Improving team performance: debriefing in healthcare education

Walter Eppich and Mark Adler (Children’s Memorial Hospital, Chicago, USA)

Venue: Hyatt Regency Hotel

Cost: $125

Healthcare educators have long recognized the importance of giving effective feedback in improving team performance in clinical settings. A high degree of proficiency in this important skill, however, often remains elusive. This workshop will focus on debriefing teams, whether after actual clinical encounters or simulation training, to help diagnose learning needs, promote reflective practice, and improve team performancee.

Workshop 8

(repeat of Workshop 3)

Demonstration of simulation-based training and assessment in action

University of Miami Gordon Center Faculty

Venue: University of Miami Gordon Center for Research in Medical Education

Cost: $125

The Gordon Center is a designated Center of Excellence of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. It was established 40 years ago for the application of advanced technology to multiprofessional healthcare education. The Center occupies an expanded all-new 34,000 sq.ft. state-of-the-art facility, with the full capability for simulation and computer design engineering and houses a high technology auditorium, self-learning laboratory, standardized patient training area, fire rescue vehicle, car for extrication of trauma victims, hazardous materials decontamination showers and mock emergency department. Faculty will discuss the process of operating a simulation-based training and assessment center, creating simulation-based curricula and performing outcomes research.
